Takes me back…

For a lot of us, scent is one of the strongest triggers for memories. This shave was like a very long and winding stroll down memory lane. The scent of this soap took me back to last year. As I lathered the soap, I kept thinking about where I was last January, and what I was wanting; then I juxtaposed those thoughts with where I am now and what I have on the horizon. I felt a sense of relief as I rinsed my razor and began the shave. One thing I have learned is that things may not always work out how you want them to, but they always work out.

Since we have our first snow of the season on the ground here in Nashville, I wanted a soap that was a nice winter scent. I haven’t used this soap in almost a year (due to the memories associated with the scent), but I thought this would be a great time to try it again. I have been a little gun shy of Soap Commander soaps, which is a shame because their scents are amazing. They are some of the first soaps I used when I didn’t know how to make a proper lather. I would under-load and under-work them. Today, I did the opposite. I loaded a healthy amount of soap and worked it into my beard until I was rewarded with a very thick and slippery lather.

The Stirling brush performed great this morning. I soaked it in hot water while showering, then loaded for about 45 seconds. It loaded great, and built an amazing lather on my face. I love this brush because it is quite dense, but it will readily give up the lather. Some of my Simpson badger brushes are a little stingy with the lather.

The shave was great. The fresh blade was as smooth as ever. This razor set at 4 seems to be the sweet spot for me. 3 is not quite aggressive enough, as I have to touch up a lot of areas. If I set it at 5, I get some irritation on my neck and jawline. At 4, I have no irritation, and after three passes, I only needed to touch up two small places on my neck.

I received this aftershave as a Christmas gift, and today is the first time I have used it. I was a little surprised by the color, but I decided that it isn’t much different from the blue of AquaVelva and the green of Osage Rub. The scent is amazing. It smells like a rounded out Old Spice. If I had to guess, I would say this is what Old Spice used to be. My dad wears Old Spice exclusively, and I guess it is the weather today, but I was taken back to my childhood when I would be on Christmas break and spend my time just following dad around. It was a nice little trip back in time for me. The performance of this aftershave is nothing short of amazing. After the splash dried, my face felt clean & soft. but not dry at all. I have a BBS shave that has left me smelling like my dad. It is going to be a great day.
